“BestCare saved my life. I don’t have anything to hide anymore.”
By the time he had reached the age of 7, Jake’s life was already headed down a path toward addiction and chaos. Alcohol abuse as a child quickly devolved into hard drugs, drug dealing and violent criminal activity. It’s no surprise that much of Jake’s life has been spent in prison – with periods of sobriety repeatedly followed by a return to old habits and old friends.
Just eight months after serving a six-year prison sentence, Jake had fallen back into his familiar and destructive cycle until a near-death experience and a spiritual awakening finally inspired him to change. After suffering a drug-induced stroke, Jake resolved to get clean for good and to use his new lease on life to help others find recovery, too.
“It opened my eyes that I needed to stop,” he says. “God spoke to me in that moment and told me it was time to quit.”
After being released from jail following his parole violation, Jake made the choice to immediately check himself into treatment at BestCare.
Jake was ready.
“I didn’t get to see my kids grow up or be around my family,” he says of his life as an addict. “I was locked up for most of my life. I couldn’t maintain a relationship. Everything was just chaos and I had no control over anything.”
Jake says BestCare gave him the tools he needed to get and stay clean.
Now six months sober, Jake is making the most of his second chance at life by speaking to church groups and at-risk youth about lessons learned from his past, and is an active and productive member of his tribal community.
“It’s amazing,” he says of life in recovery. “I’m on the right road. I don’t have to hide anything anymore.”
Where there was once only chaos in Jake’s life, there are now healthy relationships, trust and family.
“BestCare saved my life,” he says. “They’re amazing people and I’m honored that they helped me.”
